My OBGYN rotation at Woodhull Hospital was a great learning experience and allowed me to learn a lot about prenatal care and different procedures. I especially enjoyed scrubbing into C-section and assisting during that procedure. I was able to learn how to write detailed H&Ps for initial pregnancy visits to establish care along with follow-up visits. I believe that working along with Physicians, PAs, NPs, and midwives in both the clinic and on the floor allowed me to see a variety of patients and see how they interact with their patients differently.
I appreciated the different splits that were set up for this rotation (3 weeks in clinic, 1 week of overnight shifts, 1 week of OB, and 1 week of GYN call). This allowed me to learn a lot more in different environments which included more fast-paced in the OB week and slower-paced during the clinic weeks. This rotation allowed me to go through the journey of pregnancy beginning from establishing care to prenatal care to delivery and finally to postpartum. This allowed me to learn how to manage pregnant patients in every step of the way.
The types of patients that I found challenging in this rotation had complicated pregnancies in the past and determining how management would be different for them for this current pregnancy. However, seeing the way that the providers were able to obtain effective histories and develop a plan based on that helped me become more comfortable as well when I also tried myself.
Something from this rotation that was memorable to me and that I will carry with me to future rotations is physical exams and genitalia exams. Although during my ED rotation, I was able to do some genitalia exams, this rotation helped me feel much more comfortable performing them now.
My next rotation is Pediatrics at QHC, and I hope to learn more about the follow-ups immediately after birth for infants. In my OB rotation it was interesting to see the management for the mom and the follow-up appointments, however, now I look forward to learning more about the care regarding infants and young children.
