Self Reflection

My rotation at QHC was a great learning experience as I was able to work in an environment that I had never been around in the past. I saw patients with physicians and PAs and was able to gain knowledge on taking a careful psych history, diagnosing, and treating various psych disorders. I encountered various types of patients from different backgrounds and ages and learned how to approach each patient. I enjoyed going on consults to the main ED as well because a lot of these were needed to clear patients for discharge and this allowed me to learn what the actual evaluation is like to clear patients. Coming in to this rotation, I always heard that it may become a safety hazard at times but during my time there I didn’t encounter this. It is important to be aware of your surroundings as a student and to report anything unusual to the provider. Keeping a distance from patients was important as patients can get agitated at any time. I believe that I may be interested in psych in the future as a per diem job and I’m grateful for the knowledge I was able to gain here at QHC.
