My site visit for my surgery rotation was held with Professor Seligson. These 2 sessions were great learning experiences for me and she provided feedback I will use in the future. During our first site visit, we went through one H&P and 5 pharm cards. Professor Seligson found it interesting how different hospitals/providers have different thresholds for when a patient should go for surgery. For the pharm cards, she asked unique questions for each card and this was helpful because it helped associate each drug with a unique indication or adverse effect. This helps to remember the pharm cards much more easily.
On the last site visit, we went through another H&P along with a journal article and 5 pharm cards. I presented my H&P on a patient with thyroid cancer requiring total thyroidectomy. I presented my journal article on the use of intraoperative neuromonitoring during thyroid surgery. I explained the importance of detecting the recurrent laryngeal nerve during surgery and preventing injury due to severe complications post-op. Professor Seligson found the amount of new technology being used in various areas of medicine really interesting.
